Kilkenny hurling legend DJ Carey appeared in court in Dublin and has been charged with multiple fraud and forgery offences over an eight-year-period.
According to RTÉ, the five-time All-Ireland winner was arrested this morning by appointment, and brought to court by Gardaí from Waterford.
The 52-year-old faces 21 charges under the Theft and Fraud Offences Act against 25 people, and has been accused of inducing 23 of them to pay him money by fraudulently claiming to have cancer.
It's reported that the Kilkenny native told said people that he needed the money in order to obtain treatment for the fraudulent illness.
These offences are alleged to have occurred between 1 January 2014 - 31 December 2022.
Detective Sergeant Michael Bourke from Waterford Garda Station gave evidence of Mr Carey's arrest, charge and caution.

He told the court that he arrested Mr Carey at 9.05am on Friday morning at Blanchardstown Garda Station and that Mr Carey made no reply when he was charged with the offences eleven minutes later.
The Director of Public Prosecutions has directed trial on indictment and Mr Carey was handed the book of evidence in court and sent forward for trial at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
The former hurling star was granted bail on the condition that he signs on every Friday at a Dublin garda station between 9am and 9pm, and is available to be contacted by police at all times.
His condition also included that he would have to inform policE if he had any intentions of travelling out of the country or to the UK for work.
The judge noted Mr Carey had "no income whatsoever" and is to appear again at the next sitting of the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 3 November.
