Niall Byrnes, the father of Limerick hurler Diarmaid Byrnes, was seriously injured after being stabbed multiple times in his house last Thursday, September 11.
He was brought to University Hospital Limerick following the incident in Patrickswell.
According to reports, his condition has now stabilised.
A source for the Irish Sun said: “Everyone in the locality and in the local GAA scene is shocked, it was out of the blue, Niall is a quiet fella who keeps to himself.
“Niall is also great supporter of Diarmaid and the rest of the Limerick team, he is a regular at their matches, and whatever has gone on, he didn’t deserve that.”
In a statement, the Gardaí said: “Gardaí are investigating an incident of assault at a residential premises in Patrickswell, Limerick last Thursday evening, September 11 2025.
“A man aged in his 60s, was taken to University Hospital Limerick to be treated for injuries.
“Enquiries are ongoing.”
Byrnes won the Hurler of the Year award in 2022, and is a five-time All-Ireland winner with the Treaty County, and has six Munster SHC titles.
