Brave and powerful decision from the Cork GAA star.
Valerie Mulcahy is one of the country's most decorated sportswomen having claimed nine All-Ireland titles with the all-conquering Cork ladies football side, and now she has decided to go public on her sexuality to try and help others.
The schoolteacher will feature in Donal Óg Cusack's new documentary,'Coming out of the Curve' which is to be aired next week on RTE.
The former Cork goalkeeper investigates what it's like to be gay in Ireland in the 21st century and Mulcahy discusses the difficulties she has faced throughout her career as a gay sportswoman,'When I was younger, I didn’t want to be gay.'
The teacher is also pictured with her partner in the tv documentary and her sexuality has long been known to her team-mates.
She is the first high-profile female GAA star to come out as gay and joins Nikki Symmons as one of just a handful of openly gay female athletes in Ireland at present.
