Last week, Down GAA fans rejoiced after reports emerged that one of their finest ever footballers was making an inter-county comeback.
Benny Coulter, who retired in November 2014, was said to be on the brink of a return to the senior football panel. Added to the return of Marty Clarke, there was reason to hope again.
However, it now seems that new Down manager Eamonn Burns will have to plan without Coulter next year.
The 33-year-old Mayobridge forward was up with the sparrows this morning and he was the bearer of bad news.
