Are the Cork footballers going to go back to the future and appoint Billy Morgan as manager?

If any man knows how to lead the Cork footballers at this stage it is two-time manager Billy Morgan. The Irish Times are this morning reporting that the veteran manager is being considered as a replacement for Brian Cuthbert as the availability of original favourite John Cleary remains unclear. Ronan McCarthy, a selector under Cuthbert and predecessor Conor Counihan, is in the running, along with Ephie Fitzgerald and Ned English, but Morgan's name is the one that leaps off the page. An All-Ireland winning goalkeeper with Cork in the 1970s, Morgan managed the Rebels for a hugely successful 11 years, which saw Cork reach four straight All-Ireland finals and win back-to-back titles in 1989-90. He came back for another four-year stint in 2003, leading Cork to another All-Ireland final, which ended in heavy defeat to Kerry. He resigned after that humbling loss and few would have thought the former Nemo Rangers and UCC boss would return for a third spin but he, and his captain in 1990, Larry Tompkins, are reportedly in the running. The selection committee are expected to make a decision in time for next Tuesday's county board meeting. Meanwhile, in Kerry, Éamonn Fitzmaurice has moved quickly to replace trainer Cian O'Neill following his leap into management with his native Kildare. The 1997 All-Ireland winning captain Liam Hackett has been brought in as a selector to take the place of Padraig Corcoran, who has taken over O'Neill's strength and conditioning portfolio.
