Tuchel has been sacked.

Chelsea have sacked Thomas Tuchel, the club have confirmed in a statement. Tuchel was dismissed after losing 1-0 to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League on Tuesday night and less than a week after the transfer window closed.

Chelsea released a 57-word statement on Wednesday morning announcing that the German coach has left his role.

"On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, the Club would like to place on record its gratitude to Thomas and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the Club. Thomas will rightly have a place in Chelsea’s history after winning the Champions League, the Super Cup and Club World Cup in his time here. "As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the Club, and as it continues its hard work to take the club forward, the new owners believe it is the right time to make this transition. "Chelsea’s coaching staff will take charge of the team for training and the preparation of our upcoming matches as the Club moves swiftly to appoint a new head coach. "There will be no further comment until a new head coach appointment is made."

Tuchel, 49, was appointed Chelsea manager in January 2021, replacing Frank Lampard, and won the Champions League a few months later. Under the former Paris Saint-Germain coach, Chelsea finished in the top four last season. He also helped the club navigate a difficult period after the UK government placed sanctions on the club's former owner Roman Abramovich. American Todd Boehly bought the club at the end of last season and oversaw a massive transfer spending spree of almost £300m. Yet, after just six Premier League games, the club has relieved Tuchel of his duties.

In his final press conference as Chelsea boss, Tuchel was heavily critical of his team, who lost 1-0 in the Champions League to Dinamo Zagreb. "I'm angry on myself," the German coach told reporters. "I'm angry on our performance. It's not aggressive enough on the ball, it's not enough individually or enough as a team. "Not a lot [of players are playing at the top of their game]. It's obvious that we're underperforming. It's a lack of determination. A lack of hunger and intensity. You cannot expect to win games. We are clearly nowhere near where we want to be. "I just know that I need time to digest it and find solutions. It's a story of the last games - we start okay. But then we lack precision. We lack the smell of blood. "It's clearly my job to analyse it. Clearly, we need to be much better. We are not happy with our results. We are not happy with our performances. I'm a bit surprised by this performance today. "I didn't see it coming. Obviously, I was in the wrong movie. I thought that the last game helped us, we showed a reaction against West Ham. Had good training sessions. I thought the team were prepared. "I didn't see it coming that's why I know I'm angry on myself. There is no day off in the next days, don't worry. There cannot be a day off at the moment."
