A move to Old Trafford would seemingly make perfect sense for both the player and United. Mourinho would be gaining a right-back that's an upgrade on converted winger Antonio Valencia.
The Ecuadorian has played well at full-back this season, but Coleman is arguably the better player, and has been more productive during the current campaign.
The Republic of Ireland captain has four goals and one assist so far this season, compared to a single assist for Valencia.
While, for Coleman, a move to United would be merited after a number of excellent seasons in the Premier League with Everton.
However, don't expect Coleman to be involved in a dramatic deadline day transfer, despite the odds on him joining United plummeting.
The odds of Coleman joining United today are as short as 1/3 with some bookmakers.
However, the player himself has dismissed suggestions he'll be leaving Goodison Park for Old Trafford.
"It is that time of year," said during an interview with The Irish Times.
"I haven't heard about the story (another one in England linking him with Manchester United) but I am preparing for a game on Wednesday and that is all I am concentrating on."
Coleman joined Everton from Sligo in 2009 for £60,000, and has played almost 250 times for the Merseyside club. Even if there was concrete interest on deadline day from United for the player, Everton would be unwilling to sell Coleman.
We can't imagine Coleman would pull a Dimitri Payet either, and try force a move.
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho also ruled out any transfer activity on the final day of the window.
