Roy Keane has criticised Alexander Isak for his behaviour this summer as he looks to force a move to Liverpool.
Isak is back in training with Newcastle having initially refused to take part, instead training with former side Real Sociedad.
Newcastle have already turned down a £110m bid for Isak from Liverpool, with the Toon valuing the striker at £150m.
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will return for another offer.
Isak has a contract until 2028, while manager Eddie Howe has said publicly there is a way back for the 25-year-old at Newcastle.
Isak has scored 54 goals in 86 appearances for Newcastle, who face Liverpool on August 25 in their second fixture of the Premier League season.
Speaking on the latest Stick to Football Podcast, Keane said Isak’s behaviour was “shocking” and said his agent is to blame.
“You still train and play,” Keane said. “I’m always wary when people say they were promised something.
“I’ve said it before, you want loyalty, get yourself a dog.
“If you’re a footballer, you might be disappointed with the club, but you still want to train and play. The benefits to me training and playing is that if I stay or go, I’ll be ready.
“This would be different if Newcastle finished down the bottom, and were in disarray. They’ve just had a fantastic season.
“Eddie Howe doesn’t deserve this. It is [shocking].
“Your job is to train and play. If you’ve got into bed with an agent who’s not doing their job, you can’t be angry at the club.
“In your DNA as a footballer, whatever is going on at your club, you should want to train and play."
Keane also predicts that if Isak plays for Newcastle early in the season and performs, the fans will forgive him quickly.
“For all the fans turn against him, when the season starts, if he scores a few goals… you know what fans are like, you are a king one minute, an idiot the next. They’ll be all over him!”
