Report: Louis van Gaal has had enough of life at Manchester United and may retire early

Following numerous reports that Louis van Gaal needed to be talked out of resigning by Ed Woodward at the end of last year, it seems he is determined to cut short his Old Trafford tenure. The Mirror report that the beleaguered Dutchman is considering walking out on Manchester United at the end of this season - a year before his contract was due to expire. Such is the pressure and intense scrutiny of one of world football's biggest jobs that van Gaal is reportedly concerned about the effect it is having on himself, his wife and his family. Interestingly, the report suggests that Jose Mourinho is the favoured man to replace the 64-year-old, with current number two Ryan Giggs unlikely to be considered for the top job. Pep Guardiola is another manager soon to be vacating his current post [at Bayern Munich] but cross-town rivals Manchester City are favourites to install the Spaniard as their new coach. Van Gaal led United back to the Champions League after the club laboured to seventh place under the stewardship of David Moyes. At present, the club sit in fifth place but are on the up after recent victories over Swansea and Liverpool.
