Rafa Benitez hints at a new position for Ciaran Clark

This could be a great move for Ciaran Clark.

The 26-year-old defender has joined Newcastle United on a five-year deal from Aston Villa for £5m, and will work under Rafa Benitez next season. Clark had been at Villa since he was 11-years-old, made his debut in 2009 and played 159 times in total, but will now work with one of Europe's best defensive coaches. It's quite possible that Rafa will be able to smooth out the rough edges on Clark's game. The Republic of Ireland defender is prone to the occasional error, as witnessed at Euro 2016, but under the tutelage of Benitez, Clark could mature into a fine defender. However, even that doesn't work out, Rafa has two back-up plans - play Clark at left-back or central midfield. "Ciaran is a very versatile player, as a left-footed centre-back he can also play left-back and also as a defensive midfielder," the Newcastle manager said.

"He has a lot of experience of English football and will add good balance and competition to our squad. I am sure he will progress with us here at Newcastle, we are very happy for him to join us."

Clark didn't play a single game in defensive midfield or left-back last season, but it sounds like he'll be a useful, versatile player for Benitez in the upcoming campaign, and hopefully for Ireland in the attempt to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
