Rio 2016 has been a great tournament for the British athletes, but while Team GB pulled off a stunning haul of 66 medals in Brazil, the host nation won the gold they craved more than any other.

Unlike in Europe, the Olympic medal in football is a trophy revered by South American teams in particular. And despite the unmatched success Brazil has enjoyed in international football - five World Cups, don't forget - they had never won the Olympic gold before. On Saturday night they finally got hold of the one title that had eluded them all these years. After a 1-1 draw in the final, Germany took them to extra time and penalties - and it was captain Neymar who hit the final and title winning penalty kick. https://twitter.com/BBCSport/status/767110744190189569 The Barcelona star was overcome with emotion after the enormity of his achievement sunk in. And now the superstar has revealed he has already immortalised the win with a new tattoo. He has had "Rio 2016" and the Olympic rings tattooed on to his left wrist, so he never forgets his role in the victory. https://twitter.com/FootballFunnys/status/767461044679610369 Neymar said after the match that he was giving up the captaincy of the team.

"I do not take it as a burden, it is you [the media] who put it on me," Neymar said in an interview with SporTV.

"Today I have become a champion and I give up the captain's armband. It was something I received and honoured with affection.

"It was an honour to be captain, but from today I stop being captain. I will send a message to [senior coach] Tite that from now he can look for another captain."
