Tributes have poured in for former Newcastle and Northern Ireland underage player Michael Newberry, who passed away yesterday, December 30, his birthday.
The 27-year-old Cliftonville player joined the Belfast club from rivals Linfield this year, whom he had been with since 2021. He previously played for Icelandic side Víkingur Ólafsvík after being part of the Newcastle academy.
Glentoran boss Declan Devine - who previously managed Bohemians and Derry City - worked with Newberry at underage level, and described the situation as "soul destroying", as he paid tribute to a "wonderful person and footballer".
In a statement, Newcastle United said: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former player, Michael Newberry, at the age of 27.
"Our sincere condolences go to Michael's family, friends and all at @cliftonvillefc at this time. Rest in peace, Michael."
Cliftonville's and Linfield's Monday games were postponed as a mark of respect.
In a statement, the latter club said: "Cliftonville Football Club are devastated to learn of the sudden death of Michael Newberry.
"Our sincere condolences are extended to Michael’s family and friends, as well as the many team-mates he played alongside during his career, and supporters who will be shaken and saddened by this heartbreaking news at this most difficult of times.
"This evening’s scheduled fixture with Dungannon Swifts at Solitude has been postponed.
"Rest in peace, Newbs."
