Kasey McAteer has received his first call-up to the Ireland squad ahead of the UEFA Nations League games against England and Greece.
The Leicester City winger, 22, received international clearance from FIFA in time to be named in the squad.
McAteer is from Northampton in the English Midlands.
He has never represented the country of his birth and has now switched allegiances to Ireland.
McAteer is eligible to play for the Boys in Green through his Irish-born grandparents.
He has played 31 times for Leicester and scored seven goals.
McAteer was part of the Foxes team that won the Championship last season and earned promotion straight back to the Premier League.
According to the reports, efforts were underway during Stephen Kenny’s era to enlist the English-born winger but injuries delayed his availability.
Heimir Hallgrímsson's first Republic of Ireland squad announcement was announced at 12:30 pm on Thursday.
The Icelander, appointed in mid-July, will be at the national stadium on Lansdowne Road at lunchtime to name his squad for the upcoming games.
