Jose Mourinho ‘ready for talks’ over becoming next Newcastle manager

Mourinho is said to be open to the idea of taking charge at St. James' Park.

Jose Mourinho is reportedly ready to talk to the potential new owners of Newcastle United about becoming their next manager. Newcastle are currently the subject of a takeover attempt by the Bin Zayed Group, led by Sheikh Khaled, who issued a statement last week to say they had agreed terms with current owner, Mike Ashley. With the future of Rafa Benitez still uncertain at St. James' Park, a report from the Mirror claims Mourinho has told friends that he would 'seriously consider' taking the job if he was approached. He is also said to be on the Bin Zayed Group's shortlist of potential Benitez replacements, should the Spaniard depart. The 56-year-old has yet to return to football management since being dismissed as Manchester United boss last December, despite being linked with numerous jobs. The Mirror's report claims he has an affection for Newcastle due to his time working with former manager, Sir Bobby Robson, at both Sporting Lisbon and Barcelona. Mourinho is said to be open to the challenge of managing a club that isn't currently considered as part of the elite but that, with backing in the transfer marker, have the potential to challenge for trophies. Benitez, meanwhile, is yet to agree an extension to his current contract as Newcastle boss. Having kept the club clear of Premier League relegation for a second season in succession his deal expires this summer.
