James McClean fully intends to uphold vow he made after leaving his beloved Derry City

If James McClean had it his way, he'd end his professional career where his rise to the top began.

The Republic of Ireland international is a proud son of his hometown of Derry. It was his stellar performances at League of Ireland outfit Derry City that saw him catch the eye of Steve Bruce, who signed him for Sunderland for an absolute steal at £350,000. Since then, the Derry man has managed to stay relevant in the top divisions of the English league system and has become a regular starter at international level, but despite all his success, he hasn't forgotten where he came from. All you have to do is look at his incredible acts of generosity towards his community to realise that he still holds the town dearly to his heart. McClean hopes he hasn't played his last game in the League of Ireland as he revealed on RTÉ Radio’s Sunday Sport that he aims to finish up his career at Derry City. He explained that was the vow he made the day he left the club, one that he intends to uphold.

"Derry is where I started and that's where I would like to end my career." "It's a club that holds a special place in my heart. On the day I left Derry City to join Sunderland I said it's the place I want to end my career. Hopefully they'll have me."

He went even further, adding that a return as a player wouldn't be the only thing that would interest him, he would also consider taking charge of the club as a manager.

"To be manager of my hometown club means a lot to me. I'd be liar if I said it was something that didn't interest me."
