"Blessed and thankful I managed to walk away with minor injuries and return home to my family."

James McClean has expressed his gratitude after escaping a car crash with minor injuries. He describing the experience as one he "never wishes to encounter again."

The Wrexham captain, and former Republic of Ireland international was involved in a single-car accident on Wednesday morning while driving to training, with icy and foggy conditions reported in the area.

Eyewitnesses described "significant damage" to McClean's black Audi, which had a smashed windscreen and may need to be written off.

North Wales Police confirmed no serious injuries were reported.

McClean addressed the incident on Instagram, sharing his relief at walking away unscathed and taking aim at sickening trolls who sent abusive messages to his wife in the aftermath.

"Blessed and thankful I managed to walk away with minor injuries and return home to my family," he wrote.

"Though much to the disappointment of some smelly, scruffy, pathetic creatures that messaged my wife online, thank you for the messages of support."

Despite the ordeal, McClean captained Wrexham in their League One clash against Birmingham City just a day after the accident, showing his resilience by starting the match with cuts and bruises.

Wrexham opened the scoring through Ollie Rathbone in the ninth minute, but league leaders Birmingham equalised with a deflected header from Lyndon Dykes.

Wrexham released a statement following the crash, confirming McClean had reported to the club and undergone precautionary medical checks.

McClean’s focus will now be on helping Wrexham in their promotion push, with fans of the club praising his determination to play despite the frightening incident.
