“It was quite clearly serious foul play” – Dermot Gallagher

Paul Pogba's red card at Arsenal on Saturday afternoon was one of the major talking points of the weekend.

The Manchester United midfielder's foot landed on Hector Bellerin's leg during the second half as he stretched for the ball, enough for referee Andre Marriner to show him a straight red card. United have until 1pm on Monday to appeal the decision, which means Pogba will be suspended for three domestic games - including Sunday's eagerly-anticipated Manchester derby. Speaking on Sky Sports News on Monday morning, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher gave his verdict on the incident. Praising Marriner for spotting the challenge, Gallagher added it was "quite clearly serious foul play" and deserving of a red card. Presenter Rob Wotton then asked Gallagher a question many United supporters have asked in the time since the red card: Where was Pogba supposed to go [with Hector Bellerin's leg in such an unorthodox position]?

"Well, I don't know how to answer that question, but what I do know is where he went is dangerous," Gallagher said. "It's excessive force. Without doubt it's a red card and I think the referee did great."
