Shaun Whiter, who was set to begin pre-season training with Newmarket Town - who compete in the Premier Division of the Eastern Counties League - went to help friend Joey Abbs with a flat tyre when a Ford Focus crashed into the two men, pinning them against the back of Mr Whiter's BMW.
The 27-year-old has since lost both of his legs below the knee since the incident, with Mr Abbs also left with a serious leg injury.
Cambridgeshire Police confirmed that the Ford Focus failed to stop after the incident, which took place just before 11pm on Dullingham Road in Newmarket.
The Newmarket player is due to marry his fiancee next July and has since vowed to "walk down the aisle".
He also left the following incredibly brave message on his Facebook page, shared on Twitter by Newmarket Town's account.
