Damien Duff’s career could be over after a bizarre double injury

100-times capped Ireland midfielder 'not looking good' after bad injury while playing for Melbourne City

Duff had found a new lease of life, playing for City in the A-League, but he lasted only eight minutes of their latest league outing. He was on the receiving end of a strong tackle from Roy Krishna of Wellington Phoenix. The tackle resulted in Duff straining ankle ligaments and rupturing tendons in his calf. Speaking after his team's 0-0 draw, City coach John van't Schip told Fox Sports, 'Hopefully the injury won't be too bad - we have to wait and see - but it doesn't look good. '[Damien] said he heard something snapping near his shin... he couldn't walk or put any pressure on it. That’s not a good sign. Damien is a big part of our game plan.'

Duff signed for Melbourne last summer and has been one of the team's stand-out players this season, contributing a goal and five assists. He signed a one-season deal with the Australian club. With the season ending in April, Duff looks to have played his last game. The Dubliner turns 36 next month and it remains to be seen if he will play on, in Australia or elsewhere, after his latest injury blow.
