Cork City FC announced on Monday morning that they will not posting on X anymore amid an increase of "discriminatory and abusive language".
The decision follows a significant number of comments criticising the club following the release of their third kit which features the colours of the LGBT flag.
The Rebel army are not the first club to take themselves off X.
In November 2024, St. Pauli of the Bundesliga removed themselves calling the Elon Musk owned platform "an amplifier of hate that was capable of influencing the German parliamentary election campaign." (You can see their full statement below)
The League of Ireland side released a statement to it's 57,000 followers on X to confirm their stance.
The statement read: "Cork City FC is proud to be an inclusive place, that welcomes everyone no matter who they are. And it always will be. Over the last while, like many others we have noticed a significant increase in discriminatory and abusive language on X."
"Over the last while, like many others we have noticed a significant increase in discriminatory and abusive language on X. We have a duty of care to our players, our staff, our supporters and the wider community, and it is a responsibility that we do not take lightly."
"As a result of this, we have decided that X is no longer for us. Instead, please give us a follow on our other social media platforms. We remain active on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and Threads, as well as our official WhatsApp channel.” (You can see the statement below).
Following the post, Cork City have had to mute comments on X, Instagram, Facebook and Threads. Will other football clubs make this stance in the future?
