In a powerful interview with The Sun, former Premier League footballer Clarke Carlisle has revealed that the lorry accident which almost ended his life was a suicide attempt.
Carlisle has left hospital six weeks after being hit by the truck on a busy Yorkshire road, and has opened up about his troubles with depression, which resulted in him trying to end his life.
Carlisle revealed that he hit breaking point after being being charged with drink-driving in the weeks leading up to the accident.
"This wasn’t escaping or running away. This was the perfect answer. It made everyone happy and it ticked every box. I took two steps into the road and then jumped into the truck, like a full shoulder charge. I can remember that impact. Bang. Then lights out. I don’t know how long had passed. It must have been a few minutes.
"I jumped in front of the lorry because I wanted to die", he added.
He has since been receiving treatment for depression, a subject he has spoken about in the past, when he featured in a documentary about the impacts of stress and anxiety off-the-field for retired footballers.
