The Office is of course the genius creation of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. Part of what makes the show so incredibly funny is that it allows the deluded main character a platform to be cringingly funny without actually realising it. It's more a case of laughing at him than with him.
The modern-day manifestation of all that is probably football fan channels, where again, deluded characters are allowed a platform to...you get the picture. That's probably a bit mean - let's just say that we have a love/hate relationship with them - and find it difficult to look away.
