Manchester United got one over Liverpool yesterday by swooping in to confirm the signing of Memphis Depay, much to the disappointment of Reds' fans.
Well Brendan Rodgers has played down the coup for United, claiming Liverpool were never in for the winger in the first place.
Speaking at his weekly press conference ahead of the game against Chelsea on Sunday, Rodgers claimed that the Dutch star wasn't a target for the club. And he even kept a straight face when he said it.
"It wasn't something we were ever interested in. We already have 4 wingers at the club. We have other priorities."
While we'd normally take a quote like that on its merits, it's hard to believe it considering PSV spoke extensively about the discussions they, and the player had with Liverpool.
Their technical director Marcel Brands told Sky Sports yesterday that they allowed Depay to speak with Liverpool, and were in negotiations with Rodgers' team.
"Liverpool contacted us and talked with the player. They were also one of the clubs interested but at the end Memphis had the final decision and he chose Manchester United."
So either Rodgers is telling porkies, or Liverpool actually did meet Depay, just to tell him that they never wanted him in the first place.
