When you have the benefit of the TMO, decisions like this look baffling.
The Chiefs fell to their first loss of the season in Super Rugby, losing in controversial circumstances to their neighbouring Highlanders this morning.
The game's crucial decision came in the dying minutes, as the Chiefs chased down a kick that was being returned by the Highlanders' Malakai Fekitoa.
Fekitoa fell awkwardly after being tackled by James Lowe, and while it looked clumsy enough to warrant a second look by the TMO, replays seemed to suggest it was a textbook tackle by the winger.
However, that didn't wash with referee Nick Briant, who brandished a yellow card, much to the bemusement of the Chiefs' players.
The Highlanders promptly marched up the field to win another penalty, which they kicked with the final play of the game to seal a controversial win.
