“What better moment than that one?”
Back in July 2022, Peter O’Mahony added to his Irish rugby lore by telling Sam Cane exactly what he thought of him. Just over a year later, Brodie Retallick and the All Blacks were happy to blast out reminders.
O’Mahony had been picked up on camera telling Cane, the New Zealand captain, he was ‘just a s**t Richie McCaw’. Ireland backed up his stark chat with a big win over the ABs, in Dunedin, and again in Wellington to clinch the series.
Stewing over that for 16 months, Brodie Retallick and Rieko Ioane were the most vocal when New Zealand knocked Ireland out of the World Cup, last October.
Ioane had to be ushered away from the defeated Johnny Sexton while lock Retallick reportedly told O’Mahony, “Oi, Peter! Four more years, you ****wit.”
In a recent podcast appearance, the All Blacks veteran confirmed what he had told O’Mahony, who has just been named the new Ireland captain.

During an appearance on the What a Lad podcast, All Blacks lock Brodie Retallick confirmed that stinging remark, in Paris, to Peter O’Mahony. He said:
“I said what was reported. When they beat us in Wellington in that series, he was just into us on the field, spraying us left, right, and centre.
“I enjoy it. When you’re having your day, you let them know it, but I’m definitely going to give it back when we’re having our day, and what better moment than that one right there, that’s for sure.”
O’Mahony was focusing on the positives at the official launch of the Guinness Six Nations, in Dublin, on Monday [January 22].
“The overriding feeling is a huge honour,” he said of the Ireland captaincy. “I’m incredibly grateful to be asked… to do it for a Six Nations captain is very, very special.”
