Latest fight reportedly in the works for historic UFC New York card makes loads of sense

Another local gets the nod

The UFC matchmakers appear to be getting it 100% right for the promotion’s first ever New York card.

New York natives Chris Weidman, Rashad Evans, Al Iaquinta and Gian Villante have all been linked with fights for the November 12 event at Madison Square Garden, and another local looks set to feature.

Undefeated women’s bantamweight prospect Katlyn Chookagian (8-0, 1-0 UFC) is slated to face Liz Carmouche (10-5, 2-3 UFC), as MMA Fighting reports.

Chookagian enters into this fight off the back of a successful promotional debut against Lauren Murphy in July. Coincidentally, Carmouche’s last fight was a unanimous decision win over Murphy in April 2015.

It will be a local affair for Chookagian who grew up in Quakerstown, Pennsylvania, just a two-hour drive away from the Garden. She now fights out of Team Renzo Gracie in New Jersey, alongside the likes of elite fighters such as Frankie Edgar and Eddie Alvarez.

Following her win over Murphy, Chookagian told MMA Junkie that she would love the opportunity to fight at UFC 205. However, she felt at that time that being a newcomer to the promotion may work against. It appears as if that wasn’t the case.

“Yeah, I’m new to the UFC, so I don’t know how much leverage I have, but I am the only East coast girl in the UFC so I’d definitely love to fight in New York.”
