Team captains have been announced for BAMMA 24 and a kickboxing legend is Ireland skipper

Great idea

Just when we thought we couldn’t get any more excited for BAMMA 24, they go and do this.

While the concept of Ireland v England is a dangerous one, particularly for over-excited fans, if the security can ensure that there’s no shenanigans then we’re all for this event.

BAMMA returns to Dublin on February 27th, five months after the promotion’s last card on Irish soil.

And, interestingly, the promotion has decided to assign a team captain to both nations for the event which sees a number of Irish fighters take on English competitors in the 3Arena.

Former UFC middleweight Luke Barnatt will head up Team England which includes the likes of Nathan Jones, Andy Devent and Bola Omoyele.

The Irish team, meanwhile, couldn’t have a more intimidating captain as Surinamese kickboxer Tyrone Spong takes the reins for home fighters like Peter Queally, Chris Fields and Paul Byrne.

Spong, who is 2-0 in MMA, has spoken before about how much he enjoyed his time in Ireland and one would imagine that he will be welcomed with open arms by the fans.

“I really want to fight in Dublin,” Spong said prior to October’s UFC Dublin. “I love Ireland and the fans love me over there.

“I guess they just like real fighters.”

BAMMA 24: Kone Vs. Phillips will be held at the 3Arena, Dublin Ireland on 27th February 2016.  Tickets are on sale now at bit.ly/BAMMA24
