Joe Rogan’s pick for Conor McGregor’s next opponent is as tantalising as it is improbable

Imagine it

There’s nothing better than a good storyline.

It’s what made the rematch between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz so thrilling. It’s what made the teammate vs. teammate narrative of Artem Lobov’s match-up with Chris Avila so intriguing.

And it’s what makes Joe Rogan’s pick for Conor McGregor’s next opponent so alluring. (Although we wouldn’t bet so much as a penny on it ever taking place).

UFC 202: Diaz v McGregor 2

There are a few candidates at play for McGregor’s next fight, the leading ones being Jose Aldo and Eddie Alvarez.

A lucrative super-fight with Georges St-Pierre, if he returns as we’re led to believe he will, is not exactly off the table while the realisation of a trilogy with Nate Diaz is definitely a possibility, albeit one that may not take place for another year or so.

Rogan’s selection, however, is none of the above as the UFC’s legendary colour commentator has dropped NICK Diaz’s name in the discussion with this Instagram post on Tuesday evening.

The older brother of Nate is technically able to fight again after his competition ban came to an end earlier this month however he will have to pay the balance on the fine imposed upon him by the Nevada State Athletic Commission last year after he tested positive for marijuana metabolites.

That pending balance was the reason that Nick wasn’t in his brother’s corner for the main event of UFC 202 but if he pays up the $75,000 then it’s not impossible to conceive of a welterweight fight between McGregor and the more seasoned of the Stockton siblings, who would hold an admittedly significant size advantage over ‘The Notorious’.

Unlikely? Yes. Impossible? No. Worth dreaming about? Absolutely.
