Arguably the most grotesque arm injury in MMA history

Elbows aren't supposed to bend that way...

There have been some truly disgusting arm injuries in MMA.

Fair warning, this article contains extremely graphic content. This one’s not for the faint of heart.

Remember when Steve Cantwell snapped Razak Al-Hassan’s arm in two with an armbar? Himself and Joe Rogan winced watching the replays, but he admitted being proud of the feat in his victory speech.

It was really gruesome, but there have been worse.

Hammerlocks don’t come much more ghastly than Shinya Aoki’s on Mizuto Hirota at Dynamite! in 2010. Aoki essentially pretzeled his adversary until his arm separated from its joint. To add insult to injury, he bent down and gave him the one-fingered salute immediately after.

Another bad one, but there’s been worse.

Frank Mir made a career out of destroying limbs. Although a lot of people point towards jacking up Tim Sylvia’s forearm as his most disgusting submission, we think his one on Big Nog takes the prize. Seeing the Brazillian’s shoulder being reefed out of its socket by that kimura is enough to turn anyone’s stomach.

Arm injuries don’t come much worse than that… or do they?

Jerome Rivera may hold the accolade for the worst arm injury suffered in MMA. Rivera appeared to dislocate his arm during his flyweight bout against Brandon Royval at LFA 39.

After his attempted body kick was caught, Royval drove him into the fence. Whatever way he put his hand against the cage, it reemerged dangling lifelessly beside his body. He tried to run away, but all he got for his troubles was a shin to the face. He absorbed a few strikes on the ground before the referee stepped in to put him out of his misery.
