Former UFC fighter Angela Magana left in coma after complications from emergency surgery

Former UFC strawweight Angela Magana is in a coma after complications from emergency surgery this week.

Magana was informed that she would require emergency surgery on Tuesday and posted a video to her Twitter in which she expressed concerns about the anaesthesia.

The 35-year-old had been preparing for her Combate Americas debut when she suffered a back injury, which turned out to be a herniated disc.

According to MMA Junkie, Magana had a nerve block done on Tuesday but she didn't react well to it when she went under the knife.

"She’s in a coma, and we’re waiting to hear some positive news," her coach, Gabriel Lamastus, told MMA Junkie. "The surgery went fine. The problem was anesthesia. It’s very rare that patients react bad to anesthesia, but it does happen, and I guess this is one of those rare cases. But I’m being positive. She’ll be fine, and she’ll wake up. She’s a fighter. I’m just staying positive."

Magana spent three years contracted to the UFC after a stint on the 20th season of The Ultimate Fighter, where she was defeated by Irish strawweight Aisling Daly.

Magana fought for RIZIN FF last September before signing for Combate Americas earlier this year.
