Conor McGregor urged to consider Russian citizenship by federal assembly member

This wasn't expected

Is Conor McGregor about to go down the Roy Jones Jr route?

In the weirdest story of the day, it’s emerged that the UFC featherweight champion is being urged to give some thought to Russian citizenship.

Yesterday, an old video went viral of ‘The Notorious’ heaping praise on Russian president Vladimir Putin and Russian people in general.

“Putin is a cool man, a martial artist also,” McGregor said. “Takes no shit. Russian people are strong people. They can spot a bullshitter from a mile away.”

And those comments have not gone unnoticed as, today, the Deputy of the State Duma Dmitry Nosov has encouraged McGregor to take up citizenship in Russia.

Nosov made the claim on radio show “Moscow Speaking” as unearthed by BloodyElbow.

“First, it will help him save a few million dollars,” said Nosov, an Olympic bronze medalist in Judo . “Tax base in Russia is much lower, and it will save a lot of money. Plus, will fight for this country, strong, powerful, fair.”

It’s not unusual for fighters to claim Russian citizenship with boxing legend Roy Jones Jr and MMA veteran Jeff Monson having both become Russian citizens in recent years.

But somehow, we don’t see this one happening.
