Amir Khan may take Conor McGregor up on his superfight proposal if Floyd Mayweather refuses

How long would he last?

Would people pay to watch McGregor v Khan?

The short answer is yes, but not as much as they would for McGregor v Mayweather.

The Notorious has revealed that he would be eager to “capitalise” on his soaring popularity by taking on the world’s best boxer.

He told The Guardian, ‘If you’re talking about a fight that could generate half-a-billion – it’s this one. There’s never going to be another boxing fight like this.’

Mayweather looks set to finish out his unbeaten, money- and title-laden boxing career by taking on Andre Berto but, if he was ever short of cash, a super-fight against the Irishman may appeal.

If he chooses to steer clear, Amir Khan may well be in line to step up.

The Olympic silver medalist was denied a welterweight bout with Mayweather and is hoping to broker a deal with Manny Pacquaio – the man Money beat earlier this year – for a fight in 2016.

If he beats Pac-Man, he may eye a switch to MMA.

Khan told MMA Hour, ‘I just love all the grappling and everything that happens in cage fighting and the technique and everything. In a boxing fight, there’s not much grappling allowed. In MMA fights, there’s a lot of floor work, a lot of grappling.

‘At the same time, I’m a good puncher myself; I’m a good boxer. So at least I’ve got an advantage. If I work a little bit on my grappling, you never know. I might go in the cage next.’

UFC 111: St-Pierre v Hardy Weigh-In

Khan has trained with UFC legends Georges St-Pierre and Andrei Arlovski in recent years and is involved with the Indian MMA promotion SFL.

The English boxer has fought at lightweight, light-welterweight and welterweight in the past but is a current welterwight [140-147lbs].

Conor McGregor fights at 145lbs in the UFC but has expressed an interest in stepping up to 155lbs.

The only impediment to this match, for Khan, may be close to home.

‘I don’t think my mom would like to see me in a cage fighting,’ he remarked. ‘Obviously she hates me boxing, let alone being in an MMA fight.’
