Four horses to back on Day One of Royal Ascot

Throw the kitchen sink on 'em

Niall McIntyre

Royal Ascot began on Wednesday and flat-racing lovers across the British Isles – and further afield – are in their element.

There’s no other race meeting in Britain or worldwide, in fact, that can match the supreme blend of pageantry, pomp and splendour that Royal Ascot has.

There’s some top drawer racing too, let’s not forget.

You can watch every one of the thirty races across the five days on ITV. It’s a feast of racing.

Hayley O’Connor of Ladbrokes Ireland has given four tips for Day One of the festival and if you fancy making yourself some handy money at the expense of those smug bookmakers, these are the ones for you.

Murillo – For the second race of the day, the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at 15:05, Hayley has picked out Murillo, the Aidan O’Brien trained, Ryan Moore ridden 6-1 shot. It’s worth noting that the Ballydoyle boys have a superb record in this race, so their top shot is certainly worth following.

Lady Aurelia – In the third race of the day, Hayley has picked out Lady Aurelia who has been attracting plenty of supporters in the ante-post betting. It is hard to forget the ease with which she demolished the Queen Mary field at this meeting 12 months ago. She struck on her seasonal return at Keeneland and should have been well prepared by trainer Wesley Ward. Worth a punt.

Churchill – The 16:20, the St James’s Palace Stakes (Group 1) should only have one winner. Churchill at 8/13 is impossible to oppose.

Nootka Sound – In the final race of the day, Hayley has opted for Nootka Sound, another Wesley Ward trained shout. At 5-1 It’s reasonable value considering her impressive win in a Keeneland maiden last time out.

Best of luck!
