VINE: Day two at the Masters didn’t exactly go Rory McIlroy’s way

Irishman mixed the good with the very bad

Augusta bites again

Maybe Rory McIlroy felt that after Jordan Spieth’s incredible round earlier he just had to be aggressive and try and make some tough shots to reel in the 21-year-old. Unfortunately it was probably a bad choice as the world number one endured a very very difficult day two and is well off the pace heading into the weekend.

McIlroy’s day began badly as he hit his opening tee shot well wide of the fairway, and despite recovering with a birdie at two and steadying the ship with two successive pars his day began to unravel at the fifth.

He hit the first of his two bogeys in three holes on five, before a par on the sixth was followed by this horror show on seven that ended with another dropped shot

He then endured a double bogey at the ninth that saw McIlroy make this embarrassing error,

After the turn things have improved as he birdied the 10th and made par at 11 and 12 before an eagle at at 13 got him two inside the cut mark once again. But he limped towards the finish with  a three putt at 14 before doing well at 16 to move back to even

He ended the day with two birdies at the last two holes and a 71 leaves him  at -2,twelve shots behind Spieth.

Ahead of day three the 21-year-old is still the man to catch on 14 under.

He’s five clear of Charley Hoffman on 9 under, while there is a three way tie for third now with Justin Rose,Dustin Johnson and Paul Casey all on -7

Darren Clarke is +1, Shane Lowry missed the cut on 3 over and Padraig Harrington’s weekend is over too after ending Friday five over par.
