After a second place finish in Johannesburg last week, Kevin Phelan was on fire this morning at the Africa Open.

The Waterford man picked up a cheque for €80,000 for his efforts on Sunday, but with the form he's in it could be another big payday this weekend. Phelan tops the leaderboard in South Africa after his 5 under par first round of 67, which leaves him one clear of the field at the time of writing The 24-year-old carded just one bogey and six birdies in his opening round, the pick of which came at the par four seventh hole, when he made a third three in a row, despite being wayward off the tee. Phelan found himself obstructed by some huge trees after his drive, but beautifully faded in a wedge to within six feet of the hole, and drilled the putt home. https://twitter.com/EuropeanTour/status/573430625660596224
