The world No.1 is still away from the game dealing with some off-course issues, but Brooks Koepka's victory in the Turkish Airlines Open sealed the deal, and the million euro bonus prize, for McIlroy.
The American won his maiden European Tour title by carding a final-round 65 to finish on 17 under par, a shot clear of England's Ian Poulter, who missed a six-footer on the last to force a play-off.
Sergio Garcia, Jamie Donaldson and Marcel Siem were the only players with a remote chance of catching McIlroy, but all three required victory to keep the race alive at the season finale in Dubai. Siem started the final day just a stroke off the lead, but could only manage a 71 to finish tied for eighth.
