Pic: There is a very strange prize on offer for a hole-in-one at The China Open

It's certainly original

A sideways move, but we like it.

Usually at the average tour event you’ll see a stunning sports car, or luxury saloon lurking behind the tee box on a par 3, but the Volvo China Open are doing things differently this year.

Play gets underway tomorrow, and aside from the €500,000 on offer to the winner, any golfer lucky enough to nail a hole-in-one will walk away with a shiny, practical digger.

Yep, the sponsors Volvo are putting forward a pretty original prize for an ace on one of the par 3s, a Volvo EW60C Compact Excavator no less.

There isn’t a star studded entry list for the event, Tommy Fleetwood being the highest ranked player at 55, so we’re expecting the world’s elite to be feeling pretty jealous after seeing what they’ve missed out on.

Imagine it, you could build your own golf course in your garden with it…
