PGA Tour golfer takes home huge payday despite shooting 37 OVER PAR

Steven Bowditch, we salute you

Money for rope.

Normally, one round in the 80s means you can pretty much kiss goodbye to any serious money that week on the PGA Tour, but four???

Australian Steven Bowditch managed the feat this weekend at the Cadillac Championship, doing a fine impersonation of your mate with the 10 handicap by firing rounds of 81-80-80-84 at Doral.

The WGC event has no cutline, meaning Bowditch was able to rack up the bogeys, double bogeys, triples, quads and worse with no fear of missing out on a big fat cheque at the end of the tournament, which was won by another Australian, Adam Scott, after Rory McIlroy failed to convert a three-shot overnight lead.

Bowditch, who shot a risible 46 on the front nine yesterday, ended up with seven scores of triple bogey or worse, including a spectacular second round which featured a triple, a quad and a 10 on a par four but saw him shoot five under for the other 15 holes.

The Aussie, who is ranked 79th in the world, saw the funny side of his disastrous display, joking: “I think there were four-dozen balls in my locker at the start of the week and now I’m down to the last one.”

Then again, it’s easy to laugh when you’ve just banked $48,000 for becoming the first player in more than 30 years to fail to break 80 in four rounds of a PGA Tour event.

To put that in perspective, competitors at this week’s European Tour event in Thailand will probably need a top ten finish to bank a similar cheque.

Nice work if you can get it. Steven Bowditch, hackers of the world salute you.
