Padraig Harrington and Shane Lowry fall agonisingly short in Turkey

Ever see that film Tin Cup?

If you haven’t and you wish to you should probably stop reading now, there is a major spoiler.

Kevin Costner defies the odds to have a healthy lead in the U.S. Open but then he reaches a par 5 and thinks he can make the green in two.

He couldn’t for the first three days and he didn’t in the final round after putting a number of balls in the water and then he lands one.

There’s a great point in there about going for it and failing big or something like that.

Well, Padraig Harrington and Shane Lowry had their Tin Cup experiences except with different fortunes.

With both men two shots off the lead, they had to hit into a par 5 with the green guarded by water. Harrington made it, Lowry didn’t.

The Offaly men eventually bogeyed which ruled him out of contention in reality but Harrington showed the same nerve that won him three major championships and sunk an eagle putt.

And then Harrington, now 170th in the world rankings, hit a wayward tee shot on 16 but still managed to create a birdie chance, it was like the 2009 Harrington was back in action.

He missed it though, just by a fraction as Nicolas Colsaerts and Dylan Frittetlli joined Justin Rose at the top of the leaderboard.

And as Harrington misfired on the 17th, Rose extended his lead at the top over the pair in a clutch putt on the final hole, two birdies were needed.

It wasn’t to be a day for the Irish over in Turkey in the end as former U.S. Open winner Justin Rose sealed his second consecutive win, and well deserved too.

For both Harrington and Lowry though their winless year continues but not for the lack of trying, that’s for sure.
