VIDEO: Galway ladies grab best team goal of the weekend inside 13 seconds

The perfect start

A good start is half the battle.

Not our words, but a ‘seanfhocal’ of course, and that seems to have been the inspiration for a wonderful opening goal in the Galway ladies’ win over Monaghan on Sunday in the LIDL National Football League clash by 3-13 to 2-09.

Goals at any time of a game are important of course, but to get one right from tip-off with a manager’s words still ringing in your years must be especially pleasing.

It must also be a hammer blow to the team that concedes, as the importance of ‘keeping it tight’ for at least the opening 10 minutes goes out the window.

Full-forward Tracey Leonard was the woman to slam the ball into the back of the net, and the major was captured in all its glory by Jerome Quinn to give Galway the platform to inflict an opening day loss on the Ulster women.

It’s pretty stunning in its simplicity as well as the little jink from the corner forward to create the space.

Leonard also grabbed a second strike after the half-time break as the Westerners ran out winners over their old All-Ireland foes.
