One man’s name is on everybody’s lips as Wexford claim another huge scalp

The Yellow Bellies have beaten the Tribesmen in the lion’s den.

Joe Canning’s return party was spoiled in Pearse stadium as Galway were defeated by Wexford.

Canning had only just came off the bench when he was presented with a golden opportunity to score. After Jason Flynn was fouled, the Purtumna man stepped up to drill a penalty into the net and bring the scoreline to 3-12 to 0-15 after 54 minutes.

Remarkably, Galway managed just one more score for the rest of the game. Colm Callanan’s free from 100 metres out proved to be the final time the home crowd celebrated a score.

Goalkeeper Mark Fanning cancelled out the Galway penalty almost straight away as he slotted the sliotar home following a foul on Lee Chin. It was all Wexford for the closing minutes as Conor McDonald put on a heroic point-scoring display in the 11th hour to seal a 1-21 to 3-13 win for the underdogs.

This result means has added another impressive scalp to Wexford’s 2017 record following their 1-14 to 0-14 victory over Limerick last Sunday.

With Davy Fitzgerald at the helm, a lot of fans are crediting the boss for adding that x-factor that has seen them enjoy such a rich vein of form.
