Mullinalaghta team start a sing-song on the Late Late Show

Jack O'Toole

Mullinalaghta won their maiden Leinster Senior Club Championship title last weekend with a two-point win over Kilmacud Crokes at Bord na Móna O’Connor Park in Offaly.

Mullinalaghta became the first Longford club to win the championship and the celebrations were extensive with the team returning to the other half of their parish in Gowna, holding the cup aloft to loud cheers from the locals.

Mullinalaghta went out and they defied all the odds on their day of days, their man Paddy Fox keeping one of the country’s best forwards quiet and that act typifying and summing up the scale of their achievement.

After the game, they roared out, “We’re from Mullinalaghta, we just won the Leinster Cup! Allez, Allez, Allez” and they did a rendition of the increasingly famous tune on the Late Late Show on Friday night.

Captain Shane Mulligan could hardly bring himself to look at the penalty that eventually won Leinster for his club.

Mulligan was down the other end of the pitch and did not know whether to look at it so he turned around and awaited the cheer.

“I heard the cheer but sure I didn’t know if it was for a save or a goal,” he said on Monday’s GAA Hour Show.

“So I had to turn around but there was a green flag flying anyway…After that I asked, ‘what way did he go?’ He put it to the bottom right and I said, ‘sure that’s the wrong way, he was supposed to go the other way, they were like, ‘yeah I know but it went in anyway!’
