Listen: The local radio commentary of Joe Canning’s wondergoal is the GAA at its best

Joe makes it look so simple

Kevin McGillicuddy

We love it

There is not a single Irishman or woman who has not listened to a GAA game of some sort on their local radio station.

Whether it’s the local club championship or an All-Ireland final, there really is not much to compare to a radio commentator losing his sh*t when something magical occurs on a field.

Whether it’s a glorious point or a wondergoal, the men with the microphones have to convey the magic, the skill and the sheer ruddy class in a matter of words while also trying to maintain some sense of neutrality.

But there is no way the lads of Galway Bay FM were going to be able to keep their cool on Sunday when Joe Canning did this:

The balance, the finish and the all-round class from the Portumna man was the biggest highlight from yet another bad day for Galway against Kilkenny.

But if you didn’t have the picture to back it up then you’d get a fairly good sense that 32,000 supporters had witnessed something special from the local radio commentary provided by Sean Walsh and Conor Hayes

If they don’t use that in a promo then we will be stunned.

Huge thanks to the fine folk at Galway Bay FM
