Kerry outclass Galway as David Clifford fires from all cylinders

Lee Costello

Kerry 4-21 0-11 Galway

Many wondered if Kerry would be over their traumatic defeat to Cork last year, which saw them bomb out of the Championship before even reaching Croke Park.

They were like wounded animals today however, as they tore Galway apart with a David Clifford inspired side, who scored 1-04 in the first half, kicking scores from his right, left and a palm-finish to get the goal.

He wasn’t the only Clifford clipping scores as his brother Paudie danced his way through the Galway defence before side-footing a silky finish into the net. He could have been on a hat-trick and was a constant threat in front of goal.

Killian Spillane probably got the pick of the bunch and ended the first half with 0-4 as the Galway team appeared to be non-existent, struggling to get a hand in on any Kerry player, who were simply finding it too easy.

Less than one minute into the second half David Clifford got his hat-trick with a soccer-style goal.  The ball spilled to his feet and every old fella in the country would have been screaming for him to bend his back, but instead he drags the ball into the inside and smashes it into the net.

He ends the game 3-6 which is just frightening stuff.

The game finished Kerry 4-21 0-11 Galway, but it was dead and buried before the first water-break.

How far can this Kerry team go?
