“He gave me one last smile and passed away.” This is what the GAA is all about

Beautifully heartbreaking letter shows what the GAA really means to people

Conan Doherty

This beautiful, heartfelt, inspiring letter sent by a Wexford woman to the senior hurlers is just marvellous.

Mavis Gallagher spent her father’s final moments with him by his hospital bed and neither of them would’ve had it any other way.

Her powerful, heartbreaking story was posted on Facebook after Wexford’s replay win over Clare in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship this summer as she sought out to thank the players and the managers for giving her and her father a final great memory spent over a match.

The emotional message was printed at the weekend in the programme of the Wexford club football final and it is sure to inspire the next generation of Gaels.  If anyone is looking to understand how deeply the GAA runs in some people’s lives, read this.
