GAA team of the weekend

Niall McIntyre

Gaelic football…everywhere.

The last weekend of the Football League is always an entertaining one with counties dropping and rising left, right and centre and the last round just past was no different.

It seemed like every single Gaelic football team had something to play for, and that only revved up the hype. Meath’s promotion to Division One for the first time since 2006 was perhaps the most colourful triumph of the day, though Laois’ win over neighbours and rivals Carlow will have gone down well in the O’Moore County.

Mayo are back in a Division One final while Dublin take a rare break on League final day. Tyrone are coming, and full forward Cathal McShane is becoming an absolute weapon for them on the edge of the square.

And then there was the hurling. Limerick and Dublin played out a physical encounter at breakneck pace while Waterford gave us a glimpse of what we’ll be seeing from them in the summer – some class attacking hurling.

Aside from that there were some big ladies football games at the weekend, where Tipperary’s 16-year-old star Caitlin Kennedy scored a goal that keeps Tipperary up in Division One and sends Monaghan down.

And there were school games, where Tipperary minor hurling panellist Colm Fogarty scored 1-4 from play in Borrisokane CC’s All-Ireland C hurling triumph over Coláiste Na Coirbe.

Here’s your GAA team of the weekend.
