A former Mayo inter-county football has been before Castlebar District court, after being charged in connection with a serious assault in the town last year.

Davitt Neary was charged, along with three other men in relation to an incident on Tucker Street, Castlebar, on 23 August 2025.

Davitt Neary (23) of Shanvalley, Breaffy Woods, Castlebar; Rhys Neary (18) of Shanvalley, Breaffy Woods, Castlebar and Paul Dowding (24) of Frenchhill, Castlebar appeared before Castlebar District Court.

The three were charged with assault causing harm and violent disorder in relation to the incident which took place on Tucker Street, Castlebar.

A fourth man, Oran Groarke (23) of Ballynew, Turlough Road, Castlebar was charged with violent disorder.

Davitt Neary made no reply to the charges.

Judge Vincent Dean was told by Detective Garda Roisin Loftus that she arrested the former Mayo footballer earlier this morning before the court sitting.

The issue of legal aid was deferred to the next court sitting and Judge Deane agreed to the State's request that Mr Neary be remanded on bail, pending service of the book of evidence.

Judge Deane remanded all four men on bail to appear before Castlebar District Court on July 1.
