The 9 worst excuses you allow yourself to skip a day in the gym

There are too many boys like this in every club

Conan Doherty

It’s a constant struggle.

Everyone wants to go to the gym but nobody wants to feel bad about not going to the gym.

So we tell ourselves little fibs because, let’s face it, you really want to go to the gym. You just haven’t been able to.

There are a number of reasons for that.

What’s the point in going if you’re not going to give yourself enough time to recovery properly?

You’ll only make it worse if you push it. You’ll not see any gains if you don’t allow your body to get back.

Rest up. It’s good for you.

As long as you get the blood flowing, like. You just need a pump. Press-ups are actually a really tough workout. You haven’t done sit-ups in ages anyway.

It’s good to mix it up from what you would normally do.

You can’t risk injury. You can’t risk having DOMS going into the game. You probably shouldn’t even train this week at all.

Sure you did enough lifting back in January. You’re just getting yourself right for the match now.

You should probably wrap yourself in cotton wool.

For God’s sake, you don’t want to lose any bloody weight. You’re going to the gym to bulk up after all – what the hell would the point be if you go there on an empty stomach?

Some days, it’s just more important to get good food on board. It’ll stand to you in the long run.

No point bench pressing if you can’t kick the ball over the bar, right?

You can lift all the weights you like but it won’t improve the fundamentals you need for this game. You’ve got those, you’re practicing those more than anyone else, so who cares about anything else?

Yeah, the younger lads are making fast improvements, that scrawny reserve is now pretty damn athletic but you’re not too fussed because you know what you’re capable of.

None of them are bigger than you at your biggest.

You have muscle memory.

If you want to, you’ll get it all back just like that. But you don’t want to.

You’re planning on going tomorrow anyway, what’s the point in going this late?

You’re feeling a little tired too so, mentally, this will be better for you and you can go at it properly when you’re 100 per cent.

You’ve got your gear, you could go, but the maths just don’t add up.

Yeah, so you’re not as strong as you used to be and you don’t have big muscles but you don’t care because you can run much further.

You’re not in it for the beach muscles. You’re not a poser like the rest of them.

So he’s got f**king massive muscles, he’s eating like a champion and he’s an absolute animal under every exercise in the gym. Whoopee-doo.

He’s too big.

He’s not functional.

He can’t move around a pitch like he should be able to and he has been focusing too much on lifting weights instead of practicing his ball skills. He’s an injury waiting to happen as well.

He could do with skipping a gym session or two.
