Frantic finish to Chicago GAA clash features pure Irish commentary on Facebook Live

“That’s not a free! Sure the guy fell down!”

Mayo stars Diarmuid O’Connor and Conor Loftus are over in Chicago playing with St Brigid’s after their county’s All-Ireland exit. The two lads have linked up with their former All-Ireland under-21 winning teammate Brian Reape and are in the thick of another cup quest.

Sunday saw them togging out to face Wolfe Tones in the Chicago Senior Men’s Championship and it was a humdinger.

Brigid’s led 1-11 to 0-9 at one stage but Tones clung on, took their points, and clawed their way back into the tie. The chap in charge of keeping Brigids fans updated on Twitter tried his best but it was hard to get out all the scores and scorers from his vantage point…

Fortunately, Chicago GAA provided a live video of the second half and it was entertaining stuff.

There were some feisty confrontations, nice pieces of skill and some clutch scores. All the while, viewers were treated to some memorable quotes from the sidelines.

To the players: “I’ve had enough of the f***ing wides lads!”

To the linesman: “That was f***ing out…. you stupid c***!”

About a smaller player: “Ach, he’s good but he’s too light.”

To the ref: “You’ve got to blow for the first one. What the f*** ref?!”

To the players: “Ah boys, you’re standing back and inviting them on!”

When the smaller player was knocked off the ball: “Told ye he was too light!”

All standard enough fare for a GAA match, especially a close-fought one, but the American twang to some of the voices make it a good watch.

Tones rescued a point with an equalising point in injury time and the game finished 1-15 to 0-18. As the final whistle went, a voice from the crowd asked, “Is it overtime?”

Both sides have picked up some good results in the championship this summer so could yet meet in next month’s final. We hope there’s a live stream of that too.

Some craic.
