Athlone player celebrates county title just weeks after his life was saved with a defibrillator

What a story

Cathal Joyce was never going to let anything prevent him from returning to Cusack Park.

The Athlone GAA player was at the centre of a major emergency last month when he suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch ahead of his club’s intermediate county football semi final in Mullingar against Rosemount.

Joyce was revived on the field by medical personnel using a defibrillator, and on Sunday, just weeks after the incident, he was with his team-mates as the club lifted the county title with a 0-11 to 0-9 win over Tubberclaire.

Joyce did not feature in the action on the pitch as he continues his recovery, but was delighted to get his hands on the trophy afterwards
